Act to Stop the “Financial CHOICE Act” in the House—Vote Expected Today

Right now, urgent action needs to be taken. While the eyes of the world are focused on today’s Comey hearing, the US House is expected to vote on the Financial CHOICE Act (HR 10). Please call your Congressman this morning and tell him (all PA Reps are men) to vote NO.

The CHOICE Act will “repeal and replace” the protections that were put in place after banks wrecked the economy in 2008. In particular, the bill would eviscerate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency created in 2010 to put consumers first, and has already returned almost $12 billion to more than 29 million consumers who have been wronged by financial bad actors.

The Consumer Bureau also serves consumers who file complaints to it, and so far more than 28,000 Pennsylvanians have depended on the CFPB for help in dealing with their bank or lender.

Call (202) 224-3121 to reach the switchboard on Capitol Hill. Here is a phone script:

“Hi, my name is ______________. I am calling to urge Representative ______________to vote NO on the Financial Choice Act. This bill would make it easier for big banks and predatory lenders to rip people off, and it would increase the likelihood of another financial crisis.

In particular, it will gut the CFPB, an agency that more than 28,000 Pennsylvania residents have depended on for help in dealing with their bank or lender. The CFPB has won $11.8 billion in relief for over 29 million Americans by standing every day in our corner, as consumers. This bill will also enable banks to return to the same recklessness that caused the 2008 financial crash, where we watched 8 million Americans lose their jobs and 4 million more lose their homes.

I want to thank Congressman ___________ for his time and consideration. I will be watching closely and hoping that he votes no.
