Bad Charter Legislation Thought to Be Dead for Now

From Education Voters of Pennsylvania (http://www.educationvoterspa.org/):

The PA legislature has gaveled out of its final session day before the elections. Thanks to your strong advocacy, HB 530, truly terrible charter school legislation, did not come up for a vote this week.

Unless something unprecedented happens, we do not expect the legislature to take up HB 530 before the end of this session on November 30th. After November 30th, all legislation that has been introduced in the current session, including HB 530, will die.

Each phone call you made and email you sent made a difference. Lawmakers from every county in PA heard from constituents who strongly opposed HB 530, and they listened to you! Thank you for taking the time to call and email.

Pennsylvanians spend $1.5 billion taxpayer dollars on charter school tuition bills every year. As we look forward, we must continue to build statewide demand for real reforms to Pennsylvania’s charter school law that will both protect taxpayers and improve education quality for all children in the Commonwealth.

For the moment, though, please take a few moments to enjoy knowing that working together, we stopped legislation that would have been very harmful to public education in PA.

Over the next few weeks, Education Voters will be working on a variety of education policy issues and preparing for what promises to be another challenging budget season. If there are specific issues you would like to learn more about, please let me know. As always, thank you again for being engaged and for your support of strong public schools for all students in PA.
