Primary Purpose:

The Advocacy Associate supports advocacy efforts in Washington, DC as part of the dynamic, forward thinking, mission-centered IRP+ Advocacy Team. The Advocacy Team is comprised of the Associate Director of Grassroots Organizing, Senior Policy Counsel, Grassroots Organizer, two Media Associates, and Interfaith Advocacy Minister, all supervised by the Director of Policy and Advocacy.

Responsibilities include drafting policy, communications, and grassroots organizing resources; supervising and training interns; tracking and analyzing monitoring, evaluation, and learning efforts; coordinating logistics for Advocacy Team efforts.

Essential Duties:

  • Develop resources for national, state, and local advocacy, such as policy updates, factsheets, reports, action alerts, policy statements, press statements, press releases, media advisories, presentations.
  • Track and maintaining accurate and up to date information on policy proposals that would impact the lives of immigrants and refugees at the national, state, and local levels.
  • Support Advocacy Team monitoring, evaluation, and learning efforts and assist in grant management and funding proposals and reports.
  • Contribute to Advocacy Team’s policy communications, such as updating relevant advocacy webpages, writing blog posts, and drafting outreach emails to Members of Congress.
  • Manage the Advocacy Team’s intern program by conducting university outreach, interviewing intern applicants, and training and supervising interns.
  • Support grassroots organizing campaigns and trainings through developing resources, handling logistics, and interfacing with training participants, as needed.
  • Compile news articles, monitor relevant media hits, and draft opinion editorials, press releases, and media advisories.
  • Lead on logistics for the Advocacy Team, including preparing for events, meetings, and travel; schedule and track internal and external meetings and maintain team calendars; maintain and update contact databases to track congressional, administrative, and organizational contacts and outreach efforts; assist in planning policy‐related events, such as Hill briefings; and other tasks as needed.
  • Represent CWS and its member communions at congressional meetings, briefings, hearings, think tank events, and meetings with individuals and groups related to asylum, immigration and refugee issues of both a domestic and international nature, as appropriate.
  • Create and maintain a manual for this position.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Undergraduate degree in political science, human rights, or related field required, graduate degree preferred.
  • Experience: At least three years of experience in direct service, advocacy, or community organizing, or similar background in grassroots advocacy campaigns.
  • Demonstrated interest in refugee and immigrants’ rights policy.
  • In-depth knowledge of the U.S. political process, current political dynamics, and policy issues that impact the lives of immigrants and refugees.
  • Excellent writing, copy editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines in a fast‐paced work environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and work creatively.
  • Experience with Salesforce, Knowlegis, CQ Roll Call, CQ Engage, Microsoft Office programs, WordPress, InDesign/Adobe or similar software preferred.
  • Experience or comfort working with U.S. faith communities.
