Primary Purpose:

This position will be part of the Church World Service (CWS) Immigration and Refugee Program (IRP) advocacy team, working with local congregations to expand engagement in community organizing for immigrant and refugee rights. Under the direction of the National Grassroots Coordinator, this position will provide leadership and direction for faith community outreach with an emphasis on rural organizing efforts and assisting local organizing efforts to build up the Sanctuary Movement in new regions. Requisite experience includes a theological education and/or several years of experience with faith-rooted community organizing. Previous experience with immigrant and refugee population and proficiency in Spanish a plus.

Essential Duties:

  • Under the direction of the Associate Director for Grassroots Organizing, work closely with CWS member communions and the Interfaith Immigration Coalition to engage local team building efforts of faith communities with an emphasis on rural communities and Sanctuary Movement networks.
  • Leadership development and organizing trainings including curriculum development.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with organizations and coalitions that work directly with affected communities.
  • Preaching, teaching and speaking about the importance of welcoming immigrants and refugees.
  • Relationship building and one to ones with key faith leaders in the CWS network.
  • Assist in efforts to educate, mobilize and organize with an emphasis on rural congregations to be in solidarity with immigrants and refugees.
  • Collaborate with refugee leadership teams throughout the CWS Network.
  • Track all engagement with congregation contacts, leaders and volunteers and assist IRP affiliates in effective outreach strategies to faith communities.
  • Coordinate production of relevant social media content and communications materials to assist with communications efforts including Op-Eds, media advisories, and videos demonstrating engagement and support for refugee resettlement.
  • Set goals, track progress and map measurable outcomes.
  • Help administer appropriate support and funds to grassroots congregations and field teams.
  • Increase understanding about the connections between involvement in refugee resettlement, community organizing, and congregational vitality.
  • Attend and present at relevant meetings, trainings, regional and denominational conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Must have a college degree, theological education and/or experience working within social movements.
  • Experience: Desired previous experience with theological education, church polity, advocacy and faith-rooted organizing and rural organizing.
  • Constituent Relationships: Able to build strong relationships with constituents. Recognize and be sensitive to issues of concern to faith communities, refugee agencies, refugee leaders and member communions. Social consciousness on history of marginalization of impacted communities and how to accompany immigrants and refugees with awareness to ethnic, cultural, religious and gender issues.
  • Teamwork: Work well in team environment showing mutual respect and value for all team members. Join team meetings, collaborate on projects, work in a fast paced setting and produce resources that add value to the immigration and refugee ministries of congregations in the CWS network. Understand how to build teams within congregations and how to work with teams of refugee leaders.
  • Coalition Building: Have experience working in collaboration with coalitions being able to transcend conflicts and build successful campaigns together that win concrete outcomes.
