Primary Purpose:

This position will be the Church World Service (CWS) Immigration and Refugee Program (IRP) congregational and member communion relations representative responsible for coordinating, maintaining and expanding faith community involvement in welcoming refugees. Under the direction of the Associate Director, Community Organizing for IRP+, the incumbent will work with CWS member communions, denomination representatives, and local congregations to engage them in refugee resettlement. They will provide leadership and direction for faith community outreach among CWS refugee resettlement offices and coordinate with the CWS Advocacy team, including refugee organizers and leadership teams.

The incumbent is responsible for assisting with planning and implementation of conferences and training events. Strong coordination with IRP program and advocacy teams is crucial to the work of this position.

Essential Duties:

  • Under the direction of the Associate Director, Associate Director, Community Organizing IRP+, maintain relationships with CWS member communions, denomination representatives, and congregations.
  • In conjunction with CWS member communions, help build welcome teams within congregations to assist in refugee resettlement and refugee rights work.
  • Coordinate faith community outreach, involvement with CWS/IRP local offices and affiliates, refugee leadership teams and community organizing efforts in line with the CWS mission.
  • Assist in efforts to educate, mobilize and organize congregations to be in solidarity with immigrants and refugees.
  • Develop training materials for the CWS network and partners on faith community outreach and involvement, as well as resources to assist with recruiting, training and supporting volunteers from local communities of faith.
  • Develop database tools to assist affiliates, sponsorship developers and denominations to collect and track congregation, welcome teams and volunteer involvement.
  • Coordinate production of relevant social media content and communications materials to assist with communications efforts including Op-Eds, media advisories and videos demonstrating engagement and support for refugee resettlement.
  • Attend, provide resources and lead workshops on immigrants’ and refugee rights at denominational conferences and meetings.
  • Respond to emergency assistance requests from the affiliate network, engaging member communions.
  • Increase understanding about the connections between involvement in refugee resettlement, community organizing, and congregational vitality.
  • Attend and present at relevant meetings, trainings, regional and denomination wide conferences.
  • Handle other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:

College degree, theological education, community organizing or equivalent work experiences.

Experience:

Experience working with local congregations and resettlement of agencies to welcome refugees. Previous experience with theological reflection, church polity, advocacy and community organizing.  Knowledge and experience in working with excel, powerpoint and database software is essential.  Strong writing skills are a must.

Capacity to understand and build effective traditional media and social media strategies to lift up the work of the congregations’ work with refugees and immigrants. 

Constituent Relationships:  Able to build strong relationships with constituents.  Facilitate interactions and serve as a resource in relations with stakeholders.  Recognize and be sensitive to issues of concern to faith communities, refugee agencies and member communions.  Social consciousness on history of marginalization of impacted communities and how to accompany immigrants and refugees with awareness to ethnic, cultural, religious and gender issues. 

Job Knowledge:  Understand the mission and values of CWS and faith-based organizations and how they apply to their work and relationships with others.  Understand how the work performed supports CWS in achieving its larger missions and goals. Experience working with multicultural, ecumenical and multifaith communities with sensitivity and integrity. Knowledge base around a broad range of information regarding specific relevant CWS programs.  Apply a depth of knowledge within area of responsibility to implement assigned activities.  Demonstrate capacity to expand learning of applications or technology to perform job duties effectively.  Maintain and improve the skills and knowledge needed to be effective in performing job responsibilities.  Interpret CWS’s policies and procedures for staff and stakeholders in a way that affirms the CWS mission and stands in solidarity with directly impacted individuals. 

Leadership:  Accept accountability for assigned activities and adapt work style to perform independently or within a team. Model behaviors that are consonant with the mission and values of CWS in work activities and relationships.  Demonstrate sound judgment in performing all duties.  Recognize and use individual strengths to enhance work performance.  Recognize areas of weakness and seek assistance to improve performance.  Take initiative within area of responsibility.  Facilitate the use of skills and resources within CWS.  Contribute ideas for implementing CWS’s vision and strategic plan. 

Problem Solving:  Identify problems in procedures that affect program work and recommend changes in systems or procedures to address them, then implement approved changes.  Understand and apply knowledge of the context in which CWS works, including global trends, issues, and the ecumenical movement. Exercise creativity in resolving problems and trying new methodologies, share results of problem solving experiences with others.  Remain flexible in responding to organizational priorities.

Program Planning and Management:  Anticipate workflow and take proactive steps to balance work priorities.   Understand the desired outcome of assigned work and how it supports CWS’s mission.  Gather, analyze and make use of information and resources necessary to complete work.  Set and communicate deadlines and priorities.  Successfully balance multiple activities, in support of program or departmental goals.  Manage contacts with internal and external stakeholders to ensure flow of information and coordination of efforts.  Work collaboratively with other CWS departments on strategy, program goals and reporting outcomes. Contribute ideas to effectively implement program plans and activities.  Keep other team members informed progress and challenges.   Assist others to complete priority work, or step in to handle work in their absence.

Resource Building and Stewardship:  Recognize resource building potential in all interactions and be responsive and professional in providing information.  Promote CWS’s mission, programs and services with stakeholders to assure continued support.  Use financial and material resources provided by CWS to their best advantage, including business equipment and supplies.  Demonstrate concern for natural resources in carrying out work activities.  Make the most of own time and resources to maximize stewardship to CWS.  Respect one another and relationships with staff, supervisors and managers. Prepare reports on program status relative to budget and finances.
