Climate Justice and Jobs: Building the Beloved Community Convening—October 22-23, Philadelphia

October 22, 2017 @ 10:30 am - October 23, 2017 @ 2:30 pm

From POWER (http://www.powerinterfaith.org/):

We continue to face troubling times and challenges. Over the past few weeks we have witnessed the terror or racism in Charlottesville to the tragic slaughtering of lives in Las Vegas. We have families and friends from Puerto Rico to Houston, Florida to the Virgin Islands who have suffered through the disasters of Hurricanes Irma, Jose, and Maria. More than ever is the need to build the Beloved Community, rooted in love, justice, and dignity.

POWER, as a multi-racial, interfaith organization, remains steadfast in this commitment. Growing out of our Black Work Matters Poverty Summit to build the Beloved Community, we have developed our green jobs and climate justice work. In July 2017 we released Black Work Matters: Green Jobs, a report that highlights how green jobs can lift 1 out of 5 people out of poverty in Philadelphia and surrounding communities.

Now we invite you to participate in the Climate Justice and Jobs: Building the Beloved Community Convening (http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/2115/c/10442/p/salsa/event/common/public/?event_KEY=96293) on Sunday, October 22, and Monday, October 23rd. Together we are building power to create racial and economic justice on a livable planet. Your presence is important.

Sunday morning at 10:30 AM the gathering starts, open to all, by joining Chestnut Hill United (8812 Germantown Avenue) for worship and an inspiring talk by nationally acclaimed Colette Pichon Battle, Executive Director of the U.S. Human Rights Network. She will be speaking about energy as a human right.

Our program migrates to St. Vincent’s Church (109 East Price Street) at 1:00 PM in Germantown for lunch and participatory workshops on building a climate justice movement that is multi-racial, crosses class, and includes urban, suburban, and rural coalitions.

On Monday we will gather at Community College of Philadelphia at the Center for Business and Industry (18th and Callowhill) (C-2-5) for lunch at 12:00 PM and a fireside chat about perspectives of faith, love, and community followed by questions and discussion.

There is no cost for the Climate Justice and Jobs Convening; free will offerings will be welcome. Each section will be a free-standing, worthwhile session so we encourage you to come to whichever parts of the convening that you can. Childcare reservations are available when you register. Please check with us for disability accommodations.

Special appreciation to Faculty and Staff Federation of CCP, AFT Local 2026, which is generously co-sponsoring the Monday program.
