Protecting the Susquehanna River—February 22, Selinsgrove

February 22, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Thursday, February 22, 2018, 7:00 pm

Location: Snyder County East Bldg., 713 Bridge St., Selinsgrove

Find out the latest steps the Sierra Club, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper and Penn Future have taken to improve water quality in the River.  Under a recent settlement with DEP, 10 coal-powered plants will have to obtain tighter water permits to reduce toxic releases into streams and rivers.  This includes 2 plants on the Susquehanna – the Montour Power and Brunner Island.

Patrick Grenter of the PA Sierra Club will discuss what this ruling means for water quality at a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 22nd at the Snyder County East Building, 713 Bridge St., Selinsgrove.  The meeting will start at 7:00 pm.

Pollutants from burning coal, such as mercury, lead, and selenium, can affect the drinking water for millions of residents downstream, and impair fish and wildlife along the River and in the Chesapeake Bay.

Coal ash residue stored at the power plants is also a risk for water pollution, including unlined ash pits near the Hummel Station plant (formerly Sunbury Generation) in Shamokin Dam.  Build-up of coal residues and sediment at the Conowingo Dam is an unsolved risk that could damage the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay if it overflows.

Join members of the Otzinachson Sierra Club chapter, Rivertown Coalition for Clean Air & Water and other environmental partners to find out what is being done to solve these issues and how you can protect our water.  For more information email: rivertowncoalition@embarqmail.org or Jack Miller at jmiller1018@yahoo.com.
