The Railway Man
(2014. Drama, biography.  British/Australian.  Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky. Based on the book by Eric Lomax. Rated R for disturbing violence and graphic brutality.  Starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman.)

Eric Lomax was among the thousands of Allied prisoners of war forced to work on the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during World War II.  The Railway Man, based on Lomax’s best-selling memoir, is the wrenching story of Lomax’s capture and imprisonment in a Japanese prison camp where he was repeatedly tortured which left him traumatized for life and emotionally shut off from the world.

Years later, Lomax, not knowing what he’d do, and still carrying daily demons of the brutality he suffered,  decides to find and face his torturer, Japanese secret police officer, Takashi Nagase “in an attempt to let go of a lifetime of bitterness and hate.”

The journey of our “The Railway Man” poses a life changing question: In the face of brutality, how do we forgive?
