Rally to End Racial Disparity in Education Funding—June 21, Harrisburg

June 20, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

From POWER (http://www.powerinterfaith.org/):

45 clergy and lay persons recently took the first step in the journey to eliminating racial bias in Pennsylvania’s education funding. You heard directly from our Executive Director, Reverend Gregory Holston, about how School districts that have majority black and brown children receive a smaller allocation per student than districts of the same economic status that are predominately white. When racial bias rules the day, our students have old books, few counselors, and not enough teachers to do the job.

You learned the facts. David Mosenkis, a data analyst and POWER leader from Germantown Jewish Centre, produced a 9 minute video that clearly proves racial bias in Pennsylvania Education funding (Click here to watch David’s video). But we realize that knowing the facts alone will not change this situation. We need to let the politicians at the State Capitol know that people of faith will not stand for their immoral practices. All children, whether in Harrisburg, Lower Paxton, or other communities across the Commonwealth deserve full funding of their schools, and full access to resources.

This is why we need you! We invite you to join hundreds of people of faith from across Pennsylvania on Wednesday, June 21st at the State Capitol in Harrisburg (501 N 3rd St, Harrisburg, PA 17120) at 12:00 PM. POWER will hold the “Educational Apartheid” rally with the demand to end racial disparity in PA education funding. Please be sure to RSVP so that appropriate accommodations can be made. Information regarding transporation will be shared in future communications.

Over the next few days, POWER Center PA community organizers, Reverend Tabitha Ssonko and Nathan Sooy, will connect with you to discuss next steps in the journey towards a successful June 21st Day of Action at the Capitol. Our Legislators need to hear from you, pointed, direct, and repeatedly. In the spirit of fellowship and justice we ask you to consider those in your networks who should be on this journey with us! Reach out to members of your congregations, neighborhoods, and communities and ask them to join the movement.
