Gerrymandering: House Bill 722’s Coming-Out Party—Encourage Your Rep to Sign On

From the Committee of Seventy (https://www.seventy.org/):

House Bill 722, a joint resolution to amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to establish an independent citizens commission to redistrict state legislative and Congressional districts, will be officially introduced next Wednesday, April 26.

That comes on the heels of State Reps. Steve Samuelson (D, Northampton County) and Eric Roe (R, Chester County) sharing a co-sponsor memo for HB 722, which currently has a dozen cosponsors from both major parties: Samuelson, Roe, Tim Briggs, Vanessa Brown, Pam DeLissio, Pat Harkins, Patty Kim, Steve Kinsey, Adam Ravenstahl, Mike Driscoll, Bob Freeman and Tom Murt. If your representative isn’t on this list, we’d recommend a reminder that HB 722 is still available for co-sponsorship before it’s introduced. (You can find your legislator and contact information here.)

When will it be introduced, How do we expedite it getting to the floor?

It was introduced in May and assigned to the State Government Committee in the House. It is my understanding that Daryl Metcalfe, the chair, refuses to allow it to move, so it has gone nowhere so far. The League of Women Voters has filed a separate lawsuit over the state’s gerrymandering. I don’t have the latest on that yet.

How about a post card campaign to the chair and any people who have not co-sponsored it. Can you put out a list?
