ICE Detains 10-Year-Old Girl Recovering from Surgery—Demand Her Release

From Moms Rising (https://www.momsrising.org/):

Unbelievable! Last week, five Border Control agents waited outside a hospital room to take Rosa Maria, a 10 year old girl with cerebral palsy who was recovering from an emergency gallbladder surgery, away from her family and doctors into ICE detention.[1]

This is cruel and inhumane!

*She is a 10 year old child that needs support from her family, care from her doctors and needs to be released from detention NOW!

Yes, ICE targeted a child with special needs, separating her from her family and the special medical care she needs! As soon as she was discharged from emergency surgery, this beautiful young girl was taken away from her family and doctors and placed in a facility 150 miles away! [2]

It is beyond belief that our tax dollars are being spent on stalking and detaining special needs children. It is nothing short of chilling to see how our immigration system is being used to carry out xenophobic and hateful policies. This is nothing short of a human rights abuse in the name of immigration enforcement.  Rosa Maria is just one of too many children, mothers, fathers, and community members who have been targeted by cruel White House immigration policy makers. Rosa Maria’s case is particularly chilling as it shows how broken our immigration system is as evidenced by decisions being made to target young children and families who are in health crisis and more. Now Rosa Maria is alone – 150 miles from her parents, her caregivers, and the only community where she has lived since she was three months old.

*The time to act is now! Sign our letter to demand the immediate release of Rosa Maria to her family.

None of this makes sense. But together we can shine a bright light on these troubling, and frankly dangerous, decisions.

The New Colossus, written on the base of the Statue of Liberty, is incredibly inspiring:

“Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand a mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand glows world-wide welcome…”

As mothers, advocates and community members we can hold our law makers responsible for this noble sentiment. Just like that mighty woman with a torch — our great Mother Liberty — we want liberty and justice for everyone. To be a nation that strives to ensure that all can live in dignity. And today we have a chance to make things right for a beautiful 10 year old girl.

Remember: Rosa Maria was taken from the hospital, still in her hospital bed shortly after surgery, against her doctor’s orders. She is our neighbor, our child’s classmate, our future. Her doctor has asked that she return to her primary care physician on November 2nd for a post surgery follow-up from the doctors who know her best. Join us in making sure that Rosa Maria is released to her family, can return to her community and is able to get the care she truly needs.
