The Time is Now to Make Your Voice Heard on Republican Tax Cuts for the Rich

From CLASP (http://www.clasp.org/):

On November 16, the House passed the biggest overhaul of the tax code that will impact our country’s economy for decades. The vote broke down primarily along party lines, with only 13 Republicans breaking away to vote no. See how each member voted: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/11/16/us/politics/house-vote-republican-tax-bill.html (NOTE: Pennsylvania’s delegation broke down strictly along party lines).

Those of us concerned about families struggling to make ends meet, real economic growth, and basic fairness, have found ample reasons to oppose these tax giveaways, and we have been doing just that.

Over the last several weeks CLASP has been raising our concerns with members of Congress about the overwhelming benefit provided by these cuts to the wealthy, the token offer to the rest of America, and the explicit harm that will result for millions of people with these tax giveaways for the rich.

What we have heard loud and clear is that, our voice alone is not enough. They need to hear from you—people living in their home states—about why these tax bills risk the future of this country.

Next week we will celebrate an important time in our nation’s history. One in which we give thanks for what we have and for the sacrifices of so many that came before us. We need to tell Congress loudly and repeatedly “No thanks to tax giveaways for the wealthy and corporations”!

Now is the time to find out where your Senators and Representatives will be next week when they come home for Thanksgiving break and ask them “Why do corporations and the wealthy, who profit off of our hard work, get relief and we don’t”?

NOW is the time to flood their phones and tell Congress “do not cut a check to the wealthy and corporations and then send the bill to the rest of America.” It’s especially important to contact your Senators—please call them at (202) 224-3121. Alternatively, you can call directly—find contact information:

You may want to thank your representative if he (there are no women at this point) voted against it, or express your disappointment if he voted for it.

To help you make sense of it all, we have just published two resources:

The Top Reasons to Oppose Congressional Tax Plans

While details of the House and Senate tax proposals differ, both would give big tax cuts to the richest families and corporations, while most middle- and low-income families would realize little or no benefit—with many even seeing their taxes go up. Even more damaging is that both bills would increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion—or more—over the next decade, forcing cuts to critical programs. Read about the top reasons to oppose the congressional tax plans.
