Organize a Hometown Visit to Support the Johnson Amendment

From Americans United for Separation of Church and State (http://www.au.org):

Thanks to our supporters, Americans United for Separation of Church and State has been at the forefront of the fight to protect the Johnson Amendment — a federal law that prohibits tax-exempt organizations, including houses of worship, from endorsing or opposing candidates.

President Trump has vowed to “get rid of and totally destroy” this federal law, and the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee just adopted a bill that would cripple the IRS’s ability to enforce the Johnson Amendment, undermining the boundary between church and state.

It is vital that we push back against
this bill and other bad legislation with
a powerful and concentrated effort.

Beginning the week of August 21, Americans United is joining with our allies, including faith organizations and advocacy groups, to organize Hometown Congressional Visits.

Hometown Congressional Visits are opportunities for you to gather people in your district or state who share your passion for religious freedom, and meet with Members of Congress and their staff. It’s a great way to educate them about the protections the Johnson Amendment affords to houses of worship and other nonprofits.

We’ve created a toolkit with all the information you need to plan a visit with your Representatives and Senators — you can find it here.

Now more than ever, we need your help to let your Members of Congress know that the Johnson Amendment — which has been part of the tax code for six decades — protects the right of houses of worship and other tax-exempt organizations to speak out about political and social issues, while at the same time ensuring they are not used as partisan political tools.

Join us and the many supporters of church-state separation this August Recess, and organize a Hometown Congressional Visit!

Thanks for all you do on behalf of church-state separation!
