November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to meditate on the rich wisdom, spiritualities, and cultures of Indigenous peoples. Yet, Native American heritage sites are in peril. Sacred places, petroglyphs, burial grounds, ancient cliff dwellings, plants and wildlife important to traditional lifestyles, and delicate watersheds need our protection.

The Trump Administration is actively considering rolling back conservation protections for Native American heritage landscapes that currently are designated as U.S. national monuments. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke has made a proposal for the biggest rollback of public land protections in U.S. history. Such rollbacks could lead to irreversible, tragic damage. Now is the time for deep prayer and bold action.

By December 1, we are inviting 100 faith communities to pray for divine wisdom for the stewards of our U.S. public lands. We pray God will lead them to show respect toward our Indigenous brothers and sisters — particularly the Bears Ears Commission of Tribes, whose leaders have repeatedly requested the Trump Administration uphold the Bears Ears National Monument.
