Act to Protect Rule Requiring Reporting Global Payments by Oil and Gas

From Oxfam America (http://www.oxfamamerica.org):

It’s time to mobilize. One of the most important laws in fighting corruption around the world is under attack.

In 2010, after a decade of campaigning, we helped to pass a landmark bi-partisan, anti-corruption law that shines a light on the billions of dollars paid by oil, gas, and mining companies to governments around the world. This law is a critical tool to fight poverty in poor countries.

Now, leaders in Congress are trying to use an obscure legislative gimmick to roll the rule back so corruption can go on in secret.

We can’t allow this to happen. Urge your representatives in Congress to take a stand now at https://secure3.oxfamamerica.org/page/speakout/urgent-fight-corruption-now!

This provision against corruption (referred to as 1504) requires oil and mining companies to publish the payments they make to governments around the world so citizens can follow the money. Big Oil and companies like Exxon have fought the rules tooth and nail in Congress and the courts, and now they finally have a chance to overturn it.

With your help we can stop the rollback. Your representatives in Congress need to hear from you that you are paying attention and care about fighting corruption and poverty.

Tell your Members of Congress to take a stand against corruption and protect this bi-partisan law.

This law serves as a crucial weapon for anti-corruption activists around the world by allowing them to trace oil money and make sure it’s put to use it to fight poverty and inequality.

But all of this progress on empowering citizens to fight corruption is at risk.

Our best defense is to show Congress that we are watching them and we won’t stand for actions that harm people living in poverty. We need to flood Congress offices with a clear message that going after an anti-corruption rule is UNACCEPTABLE.

Send your letter to your representatives in Congress now.

Please send your letter now.

Thank you for taking urgent action to protect this critical tool in the fight against poverty.
