Restrict Trump’s Ability to Start a Nuclear War!

From the Coalition for Peace Action (http://www.peacecoalition.org/):

Prof. Elaine Scarry of Harvard, has written a book on the President’s ability to launch nuclear weapons totally on his own authority.

It is profoundly undemocratic and contradicts the US Constitution’s balance of powers giving sole authority to declare war to Congress. This is especially frightening given the reckless, impulsive behavior Donald Trump has repeatedly shown.

CFPA has been supporting the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act (S. 200/HR 669) to rectify this situation. Unless the US is under nuclear attack, it allows use of US nuclear weapons only if the Congress declares war and specifically authorizes such use. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who spoke at a CFPA event on November 12, is a co-sponsor!

Because of pressure from CFPA and colleagues, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee had its first ever hearing on this urgent issue yesterday! In contacts with senior staff to US Senators in the region, several said their bosses might decide on co-sponsoring after the hearing.

So it is with great urgency that CFPA asks you to go to https://www.peacecoalition.org/take-action/827-restrict-trump-s-ability-to-start-nuclear-war.html and send emails to your Congresspersons NOW! It takes just a minute. If you want to increase your impact, also call your Senators and Representative through the Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121 in addition to sending the emails; alternatively, you can call directly—find contact information:
