Urge PA Legislators to Support Public Education, Oppose Charter School Legislation

From Education Voters of Pennsylvania (http://www.educationvoterspa.org/):

Lawmakers are in Harrisburg negotiating a state budget and considering legislation that will impact PA’s public school students. The PA House has already passed two pieces of legislation that would weaken public education in PA and the Senate could pass these bills any day:

  • HB 250, which funnels $55 additional taxpayer dollars into scholarships for middle-class families that send their children to private/religious schools, and
  • HB 97, the charter school lobby wish list that fails to address critical issues that impact students, taxpayers and communities.

Go to http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/6041/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=12934 to contact your state senator and Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman.

We need to make sure that our PA senators don’t follow in the misguided footsteps of their counterparts in the House. Please call your state senator and Senate Majority Leader Corman today and plan to make at least one call each week until the budget is passed.

Phone Script:

I am calling today to ask Senator XX to support public education in the PA budget this year and to oppose school privatization schemes.

I most strongly urge Senator XXX to oppose HB 250. HB 250 would increase funding for private school scholarships by diverting $55 million additional tax dollars out of the general fund and into unaccountable private and religious schools. Lawmakers need to fund our PUBLIC schools, not more scholarships for middle class families that send their children to private and religious schools.

I also most strongly urge Senator XX to oppose HB 97. This charter school legislation does not fix problems in the current law that impact students, school district and taxpayers. Instead, HB 97 strips control from local communities and makes it easier for failing charter school to expand.

Thank you for taking action! Lawmakers need to know that their constituents are watching them to see if they are supporting public education or the Betsy DeVos plan to privatize our public schools.
