National Day of Action—Protecting Children from Central America

From the Interfaith Immigration Coalition (http://www.interfaithimmigration.org):

Join us TODAY, Monday, December 4, for a National Day of Action in support of children seeking protection from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. Recently, the administration terminated the Central American Minors (CAM) program that has provided over 3,000 vulnerable Salvadoran, Honduran, and Guatemalan children an opportunity to find safety and reunite with their parents in the United States. Just a few weeks ago, the administration announced it would stop interviewing kids who were already in the application process on January 31, 2018. That means that the vast majority of the nearly 7,000 kids who have already applied for protection won’t that chance to reunify with their families.

It is critical we amplify the urgent need to protect these kids from harm. Here is what you can do today:

(1) Take action today and tell Congress to keep our promise to protect kids and reunite families. Click to receive a phone call and be patched through to our 2 Senators and 1 Representative. Alternatively, you can call directly—find contact information:

Sample script: My name is ___. I am deeply troubled by the Trump Administration’s decision to end the Central American Minors program. I am calling to urge Representative/Senator ___ to call the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and demand that they keep their promise to these vulnerable children and their parents. DHS must interview every child who has applied before they end this program.

(2) If you tweet—Join our twitterstorm TODAY at 1pm ET (10am PT): Numerous refugee and immigrants’ rights organizations will participate in a twitterstorm to draw attention to the Central American Minors program, and the impact of its abrupt termination. Stories from impacted individuals will be highlighted, and organizations will call on their followers to act. To join or follow the twitterstorm, use and search the hashtag #RefugeeKids. Sample social media posts are available in our toolkit. See Twitter handles for PA members of Congress below.

(3) Amplify with media the urgent need to protect kids from life-threatening conditions. Consider writing and submitting a short Letter-to-the-Editor (LTE) or op-ed to your local media outlets. For an LTE/op-ed how-to guide, please visit: http://bit.ly/2AkRaai.

For more resources, please check out our messaging and social media toolkit for today’s day of action.

We are all hands on deck today! Call, tweet, and Facebook your Members of Congress right now and make your voice heard.

Thank you for all your work and support!
