Thank President Obama for Preserving the Senate Torture Report

From the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (http://www.nrcat.org):

In good news, President Obama recently announced that he would send his copy of the Senate Torture Report to his presidential library where it will be protected and should eventually be made available to the public.  This is important – prior to this decision we faced the real risk that the Report would be destroyed, entirely erasing the most comprehensive record of the CIA torture program.

While this is a good step, it unfortunately also means that without additional action, the Report probably will not be made public for at least twelve years.  Further, the President still has not made the Report available to executive branch officials who would like to make use of it to prevent torture in the future.

Please call President Obama at 202-456-1111 to thank him for preserving the Torture Report and to tell him that you would like him to also declassify the Report, or, at a minimum, to make it available for executive branch officials with appropriate clearances to read.  You can say something like:

“Hello, I’d like to thank President Obama for preserving the Torture Report, but he should also declassify the Report.  If he doesn’t declassify the Torture Report, at a bare minimum he should order appropriate officials to read the Report.  It’s a disgrace that 8 years after he ended the torture program, the report on the program is still secret and his Administration hasn’t even opened or read its copies of the final Torture Report.”

Calling is best, but if you have trouble getting through to the White House comment line, you can also tweet the President:

  • @POTUS release the #TortureReport and order appropriate officials to read it. We can’t miss our chance to learn from the past!

Thank you for calling the President.
